The one question you need to ask before buying a wireless thermostat
Is your bedroom warmer/colder than your living room (or wherever your thermostat is located)?
Why you should buy an Ecobee 3:
If the answer to the question above is yes, then we recommend buying an Ecobee 3. If your bedroom temperature varies from your living room temperature then your sleep temperature will be inconsistent and probably cost you money. The ecobee solves this problem with the included sensor that you can place in your bedroom. There has been a bit of confusion since some Ecobees come with multiple sensors with motion detection, but you can set a single sensor to use in your bedroom to control your system at night and disable the motion sensor. We’ll show you how below.
Due to different factors, our bedroom temperature varies greatly. Since our thermostat is downstairs, on cold nights, the heat runs longer downstairs with the heat emanating up to the bedroom where it gets very warm. On nights where it’s not as cold, the heater runs less, and the bedroom upstairs gets colder than the set temperature.
The How: Set up the remote sensor in your bedroom
With the ecobee, you can place the remote sensor in your bedroom and set it to only use the remote sensor during sleep time. Therefore, you sleep and wake up better with the temperature being constant throughout the night and you use a lot less energy since the bedroom isn’t getting overheated.
Here’s the setup:
There have been issues with the sensors as far as motion detection goes. Their website offers replacement sensors for those having issues, but in the mode described above it only uses the sensor based on the sleep time you set and doesn’t use the motion sensing feature at all. Also, the motion sensing probably makes less sense with the ecobee with the single sensor. If you own a big house, you may want to look at the 3 sensor option.
